The sounds of the bouzouki identify Greek culture globally. It is an instrument synonymous with the birthplace of democracy. As we celebrate the 20 years of democracy in South Africa we are proud to announce a first for South African audiences: asymphonic concert for bouzouki composed by Thanasis Polykandriotis.
Bouzouki has its roots in the musical tradition of ancient Greece, the prototype was known as the Tambouras or Pandoura. Its legacy has endured and evolved through the millennia of Hellenic history.
Polykandriotis has petitioned UNESCO to recognise the instrument as a World Heritage traditional instrument, thus elevating its influence in classical repertoires.
During his stay in Johannesburg, Polykandriotis will also be running workshops at SAHETISchool with aspiring young musicians, singers and other instrumentalists – weaving together these creative efforts in a joint performance during the 2nd half of the symphonic concert on 20th June 2014 at the Linder auditorium.
SAHETI School, with the support of the Greek Embassy in Pretoria, is proud to organize this inspired symphonic performance.
There will be an opportunity to make a pledge on the night towards the George Bizos SAHETI Scholarship and Bursary fund to benefit a student -bouzouki player of Greek origin.
